The burial age of 400-600 years (XV-XVII centuries) was found near the village of Kyi in the Tattin ulus of Yakutia. The excavations were conducted by the Zarechensky expedition detachment, which included employees and volunteers. Under the wooden ceiling, archaeologists found and opened the grave of the warrior.
A special interest of scientists was caused by an iron blade more than 40 cm long, not similar to the known samples of Yakut weapons. Experts do not exclude that they have discovered a previously unknown type of Yakut bladed melee weapon, not previously described in the scientific literature. The blade was intended for stabbing and was probably one-handed.
The grave also found a bow with arrows, a knife in scabbards, a whip, a saddle, wooden stirrups and an iron cauldron, as well as funerary food. Riding equipment indicates that the buried man was a rider, probably a warrior. The find expands the understanding of the weapons and military culture of the population of Yakutia in the late Middle Ages, and the discovered objects help to better explain the life and traditions of the Sakha people before the arrival of the Russian Cossacks.
Scientists will continue to study the artifacts in the laboratory: they will find out the exact date of burial, the purpose of the unusual blade and the meaning of other finds.
