Declining geographical names ending in na-ovo, -evo, -ino, over time can become an erroneous use case, a researcher at the Russian Language Institute told TASS.
The declination of geographical names ending in na-ovo, -evo, -ino, over time can become an erroneous use case, a researcher at the V.V. Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Philological Council of the Total Foundation Vladimir Pakhomov told TASS.
“Deflection, which is still regarded only as permissible, has every chance of becoming the main option in time. And the current inclination ... has every chance of becoming a mistake over time, he said.
According to the linguist, the declination of place names on -ovo, -evo, -ino - for example, "in Strogin" and "in Altufiev" - is preserved in exemplary written speech as following a strict norm. In fact, many of these names have ceased to be spoken. Pakhomov stressed that there are no objectively good and bad options in the language - literacy and normative assessments change along with language practice.
In 2024, President Vladimir Putin signed a law creating the “National Dictionary Fund” – an information system that will describe the norms of the Russian literary language, as well as the process of their change in the course of historical development. According to Elena Yampolskaya, Chairman of the Presidential Council for the Russian Language, the creation of the fund is planned to be completed before January 1, 2027.
