As of August 31, Ukraine had to transfer to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) until the end of 2026 708.6 million Special Drawing Rights (SDR), or about $960 million, to repay and service the debt. This follows from the schedule of payments on the IMF website.
This amount includes payments planned for September – a total of 185.4 million SDRs. On October 5, the schedule provides for the payment of 61.2 million SDRs, on October 9 – another 125.7 million SDRs.
In November, Ukraine will transfer 210.5 million SDRs to the fund, including interest, fees and repayment of principal. Another payment — 125.7 million SDR — is scheduled for December 9.
Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) are an international reserve asset created by the IMF in 1969 to replenish countries’ foreign exchange reserves; the SDR is not a currency, but can be exchanged for freely usable currencies.
The value of the SDR is determined daily by the IMF on the basis of a basket of five currencies – the US dollar, the euro, the Chinese yuan, the Japanese yen and the pound sterling, with their shares periodically revised. Therefore, the SDR-dollar exchange rate does not automatically equal $1: it represents the total dollar value of fixed amounts of the five currencies of the basket and changes with their market rates.
