Likhachev called Belarus the main beneficiary of nuclear energy
Belarus has become the main beneficiary of the last 15 years of nuclear power development.

Belarus has become the main beneficiary of the last 15 years of nuclear power development. This was stated by Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev at the Bioprom-2026 forum, TASS reports.
According to Likhachev, in 2011, despite the crisis period for nuclear power, it was decided to build power units in Belarus.
“We have put them into operation since 2020, they produce almost 50% of almost little electricity in Belarus,” the head of Rosatom said.
In September 2025, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that a nuclear power plant could be built in eastern Belarus, the capacity of which could be used to provide electricity to new regions of Russia.
There is now one nuclear power plant in Belarus - the Belarusian NPP, built near the northwestern border of the country near the city of Ostrovets, Grodno region. The station is equipped with two power units, its installed capacity is 2.4 thousand. MW.
The agreement on its construction was signed between Moscow and Minsk in 2011. The first power unit was launched in November 2020. The physical launch of the second unit took place in April 2022, in July 2023 it was included in the network and brought to full capacity as part of the tests.
This is not the first time Lukashenko has spoken about the possibility of building a second nuclear power plant in the country. In January 2025, he noted that another nuclear power plant is needed due to the growing demand for electricity both in the production sector and among citizens, including due to the expansion of the fleet of electric vehicles.
