British Finance Minister John Healey is proposing that EU finance ministers build the Made in Europe industrial policy to include the United Kingdom. This is reported by the Financial Times (FT), citing sources.
John Healey will make the call at an informal meeting of the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council Ecofin in Dublin.
The head of the British Ministry of Finance is ready to negotiate a reset of relations with Brussels, if London will receive a direct economic benefit from this. Closer ties will give UK companies greater access to supply chains and customers in the defence, digital and industrial sectors.
Healey also calls for stronger European unity and to avoid a repeat of the situation in 2025, when negotiations over Britain's participation in the EU's defence fund Security Action for Europe (SAFE) collapsed over disputes over the size of the contribution. FT sources say the talks will be difficult as France and the European Parliament oppose including British manufacturers in the programme.
