The audit of the Paks-2 NPP project, which will result in a decision on the need for its construction, is planned to be completed by the end of 2026. This is the date set by the Hungarian Minister of Economy and Energy István Capitan.
According to the minister, the Hungarian government is analyzing the contracts for the project, its business model, as well as the role of the additional power plant in the energy balance. “We have not yet completed this analysis, we will finish it by the end of the year, and then we will make a decision on whether Hungary needs this nuclear power plant in the energy balance or not,” said Mr. Capitan in an interview with Telex.
The Paks-2 project involves the expansion of the already built Paks NPP into two units. The pouring of the first concrete began in February 2026. Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Madyar questioned the environmental permit issued for the joint construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant with Rosatom due to the shallowing of the Danube. The authorities also expressed dissatisfaction with the interim outcome of the audit of the contract with Rosatom.
