Spain will stop buying Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) from January 1, 2027, despite existing contracts, said the head of the Spanish foreign Ministry Jose Manuel Albarez. He confirmed that Madrid will comply with the restrictions agreed by the EU countries.
“These sanctions would not have been possible without Spain’s consent, and some Spanish companies have existing contracts.” As you know, contracts for the supply of LNG are concluded for many years to come. We intend to fulfill the requirements of new sanctions, the minister assured (quoted by TASS).
According to Albarez, Spain has one of the largest LNG storage and processing capacities. The minister said that the country can help other EU members with LNG supplies.
In January 2026, the EU Council agreed on a plan to completely ban the supply of Russian LNG from 1 January 2027 and pipeline gas from 30 September 2027. In exceptional cases, EU members will be able to extend the use of Russian gas until October 31, 2027. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Europe is still buying Russian LNG. According to the calculations of the Spanish energy company Enagas, Russia is the third main supplier of gas to Spain after the United States and Algeria.
