Sberbank has submitted to the Bank of Russia (CBR) an application for obtaining the status of a digital depository for cryptocurrency trading. This was reported by the press service of the credit institution.
“The status of a digital depository gives the right to keep records of digital currencies and digital rights, ensure their transition and provide customers with access to identifiers addresses at which such assets are recorded,” the bank explained.
Initially, transactions with bitcoin and ether, as well as the USDT stablecoin, will be available to customers. The necessary functionality will appear in the existing services “Sberbank online”, “Sberinvestigation” and “Sberbusiness”.
Sber plans to launch the first products by December 1, but the exact timing depends on the decision of the Central Bank on the application and the readiness of by-laws that regulate the market.
Sberbank already has experience with digital assets. Since 2025, the credit institution offers qualified investors structural bonds and CFAs pegged to bitcoin and ether.
