U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng will meet on Sunday in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly. Reuters reports.

The talks aim to prepare potential agreements on artificial intelligence (AI), tariffs and critical minerals. The meeting will take place ahead of the Trump-Xi Jinping summit in Washington this week.

Key topics include a trade truce expiring on November 10, shipments of rare earth magnets and minerals from China, and possible measures to limit the use of AI. The meeting will also be attended by US Trade Representative Jamison Greer.

Analysts expect small steps to demonstrate that the sides avoid escalation.
