The US allowed the import of Russian uranium through exceptions to the ban
The European Union in 2023 and 2024 annually spent about 1 billion euros on the import of uranium from Russian suppliers

The European Union in 2023 and 2024 annually spent about 1 billion euros on the import of uranium from Russian suppliers. Such data leads the German publication Focus, which connects the preservation of purchases with the dependence of Western nuclear energy on Russian capacities.
The central place in this market is occupied by the Russian state holding, uniting more than 400 enterprises of the nuclear industry. It controls nearly half of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity. These costs of the EU accounted for the supply of the holding and its subsidiaries.
Focus said it is building 27 new reactors, including two in Iran, and is supplying nuclear fuel or uranium to the US, the EU and the UK. Large-scale restrictions on the Russian economy have not led to the imposition of comprehensive sanctions against Russian nuclear companies.
In the United States, the ban on the import of Russian low-enriched uranium is effective from August 11, 2024. However, the law provides for temporary exemptions to allow individual deliveries to continue.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a permit can be issued if there is no viable alternative fuel source for the reactor or nuclear company. Another reason is the compliance of the supply with the national interests of the United States.
The volumes of permitted imports are limited, and the exemptions must expire no later than January 1, 2028. The US agency explains this mechanism by the need to prevent interruptions in the operation of nuclear power plants.
