Moldova warns of imminent rise in electricity prices
Electricity tariffs for consumers in Moldova will inevitably increase due to the rise in natural gas prices

Electricity tariffs for consumers in Moldova will inevitably increase due to the rise in the price of natural gas. This was stated by the Chairman of the Board of “Moldovagaz” Vadim Cheban on the air of the Moldovan TV channel N4.
According to him, in the coming winter, the country’s thermal power plants will run on natural gas. We are talking about two main electricity producers - Thermoelectric and TPP-Nord. The electricity produced by them must be purchased by consumers, which will affect the final tariff.
Cheban noted that the purchase price of gas continues to grow. According to him, if on September 1, the price was about 600 euros per thousand cubic meters, then it exceeded 800 euros and approached the mark of 900 euros. The head of Moldovagaz called the cost of fuel the main factor that could lead to a revision of tariffs.
At the end of August, the Moldovan government extended the high readiness regime in the energy sector for another 30 days. The decision was made after the National Energy Regulatory Agency raised the natural gas tariff by 41%.
Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Zhungietu also previously allowed a new increase in gas tariffs in October. Among the reasons for maintaining high prices, he called the situation with transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, competition for liquefied natural gas between the European and Asian markets, as well as the relatively low volume of gas reserves in European underground storage facilities.
The Moldovan economy has faced high inflation in recent years. In 2022, its level reached 30.2%. By the end of 2023, the situation was stabilized, and in December 2024, annual inflation was 7%. By the end of 2025, the indicator reached 7.8%, despite the goal set by the National Bank of Moldova to keep it no higher than 6.5%.
