Police in the Thai city of Pattaya detained two teenagers aged 14 and 17, suspected of attacking 41-year-old Russian tourist Alexander Popov. The attackers were armed with a pistol and a knife. This agency reported on Facebook (owned by Meta, which is recognized in Russia as extremist and banned).
The suspects attacked Mr Popov on the night of September 15. The victim testified through an interpreter that two young men approached him in the Jomtien area, pointed a gun at him and demanded to give him 1,000 baht in cash ($30), after which they fled on a motorcycle. The teenagers were identified by surveillance cameras. During questioning, they confessed to two thefts and two attempted robberies in the Pattaya Park and Jomtien areas. Police said they later attacked a 56-year-old Turkish national in the same area.
The department is also investigating the involvement of teenagers in three robberies that occurred in the district of Phratamnak on different days. About what exactly the incidents in question, the police did not specify. However, Thai media wrote about another case of an attack on a Russian on the night of September 14. Then 42-year-old Roman Monnov was attacked by three unknown on a motorcycle. They beat up a man and stole a bag of money from him.
Patrol officers were instructed to increase patrols of the southern part of Pattaya and the adjacent Jomtien beach at night. In August, the Thai authorities promised to increase the safety of tourists after the murder of Russians in Pattaya. Two Thais killed a 22-year-old Russian girl and her underage brother. The attackers said that they wanted to steal a motorcycle from tourists, but they resisted. Then they shot the young man and beat his sister to death. The suspects were arrested and the court refused to release them on bail.
