According to police, the victims were about 2.7 thousand cats. During the operation, police seized 50 animals, traps for them and seven motorcycles.
Eating cat meat is legal in Vietnam, and some restaurants serve cat meat. Restaurant owners must provide proof of the origin of the meat.
According to media reports, members of the group recruited people in different residential areas of Ho Chi Minh City, where they caught cats. Under Vietnamese law, theft of domestic cats is considered theft of property. Earlier this year, Ho Chi Minh City police arrested about 18 people for stealing cats for food.
