Initially, experts estimated the magnitude of the tremors at 5.8. They later clarified the data. According to the updated information, the epicenter of the earthquake was 268 km south of North Kurilsk. The hearth lay at a depth of 26 km. Tremors were recorded at 3:48 local time (19:48 MSK on October 6).

An hour later, 273 km from North Kurilsk, another earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was recorded. The hearth lay at a depth of 35 km.
