According to court documents, he is charged with conspiracy to threaten to violate the confidentiality of information for the sake of extortion of money and interference in commercial activities. The application is filed in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The source said the suspect was a Canadian cybersecurity specialist. On LinkedIn, he positions himself as a negotiator with cybercriminals to pay the ransom.
The arrest came amid an FBI operation against the hacker group ShinyHunters. Last month, the group claimed to have stolen the data of nearly all of the bureau's employees.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest of a suspected complicity.
