Hotel tenant shot dead five over property dispute

In the Indian city of Guwahati, a man opened fire at the Bilas Inn hotel, killing five people and injuring another. According to preliminary police, the cause of the attack was a conflict between the owners of the building and the tenant. Among the dead were four members of the same family. The suspect was detained less than an hour after the incident, according to PTI.

The tragedy occurred on the evening of October 26 at about 21:00 local time in the area of Bora-Service. The hotel is located on one of the main city highways GS Road, about two kilometers from the headquarters of the Assam state police.

According to Guwahati Police Commissioner Parthi Saratha Mahanta, six people were shot. Five died and the only survivor was taken to hospital.

The investigation found that the four victims belonged to the family of the hotel owners. The fifth man killed and injured was from the same village where the owners of the building came from.

Police have named the alleged gunman Ghanakantu Gogoi, who rented a hotel about a year ago. According to the preliminary version, there were disagreements between him and the owners about the terms of the lease of real estate.

After the attack, the suspect left the scene. Police found and detained him in the Paltan Bazar area for an hour. The man was seized a licensed .32-caliber pistol allegedly used in the shooting.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the conflict that preceded the attack. Commissioner Mahanta stressed that the version of the property dispute is based on the preliminary results of the investigation and requires further verification.

Police have previously identified Helena Bharali, Deborsha Kashyap and Narayan Das among the dead. The identities of the remaining victims are being clarified.

The only survivor was 42-year-old Satien Pathak. He was hospitalized at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The representative of the medical institution said that the patient's condition is stable.

There's forensics at the scene. Investigators establish the sequence of events, check the testimony of eyewitnesses and the circumstances of the use of weapons.

The chairman of the regional branch of the Indian National Congress party, Gaurav Gogoi, demanded a thorough investigation and raised the question of the state of public safety in the city.

Five people have been officially confirmed dead. Reports of six dead and the detention of a second suspect have not yet been confirmed by police.
