On Monday, the action took place in about 80 lyceums of Ile-de-France. In total, the protest movement covered 27 departments of France, and 130 educational institutions were closed. The union's General Confederation of Labour urged participants to continue speaking on Tuesday.
According to the French Ministry of National Education, eight education workers were injured in the riots on Monday morning. Several law enforcement officers were also injured during clashes with protesters.
Police have detained 273 people since the protests began in Paris. Among them are 188 minors.
Mass protests by schoolchildren and students began in France in September and escalated into nationwide demonstrations. Participants demand reform of the education system and improvement of learning conditions.
One of the main reasons for discontent was the chronic underfunding of the educational sector. Among the protesters’ complaints are the lack of teachers, the lack of prompt replacement of sick teachers, overcrowding of classrooms and classrooms, the unsatisfactory condition of educational buildings and hostels, the deterioration of infrastructure and the poor quality of educational materials.
Some actions were accompanied by violence and clashes with law enforcement agencies. The protest movement continues to affect educational institutions in different parts of the country.
