Maniac Mirgorod convicted of 16 more murders after life sentence

In 2024, the biological traces on the scarf and belt from the old case coincided with the DNA of Vladimir Mirgorod. He has served a life sentence for the murder of 16 people for 12 years. A review of the remaining evidence led to a new investigation: in 2025, the court found him guilty of 16 more murders committed before his first arrest.

Svetlana came to Moscow from Omsk, stayed with relatives and was going to work as a hairdresser. A cousin offered to perform with an Oriental dance collective. She started earning and sending money to her parents.

She was 22 years old. In Moscow she met a young man. They rented an apartment and were preparing for the wedding.

With Mirgorod Svetlana met in a restaurant. He offered to take her home, but turned to a construction site near Khimki. He raped a girl and strangled her with a scarf.

The story of Svetlana "MK" told after the first trial of Mirgorod. Among the victims was 20-year-old Ekaterina, who studied and worked. When she didn’t come back from work, her mother started looking for her. The girl was found dead in the forest.

The other victim was the wife of a police officer. After an argument with her husband, she got out of the car and walked along the road. She was later found murdered in the park.

Mirgorod also attacked in apartments. According to MK, when he met a 25-year-old visitor from Minsk, he introduced himself as Vladimir and said that it was his birthday. The woman invited him home to the Leningrad highway. She was found tied and strangled, valuables disappeared from the apartment.

In April 2003 in a rented apartment on the Boulevard of Sailor Zheleznyak found strangled visitor from Novosibirsk.

On the 800th anniversary of Moscow, Mirgorod met Lydia. She invited him home. He killed the landlady. When her young son returned, her mother was already dead. Mirgorod also killed the boy using a trouser belt.

Mother and son became two victims in the same episode. The teenager was the only male victim in the first case, with the sentence covering the murders of 15 women and a boy.

In early July 2003, her body was found in the Botanical Garden. According to the newspaper “Star Boulevard”, the deceased lay on an abandoned site with fallen trees, about 70 meters from the paved path.

Nearby were a backpack, a subway card, sandwiches in a bag and a bottle of homemade fruit. No papers. The woman's identity was not immediately identified.

It was 28-year-old Olga. She recently graduated from the Institute of Culture and lived with her parents. On the day of her death, she walked in the garden with a friend, who then led her to the Vladykino metro station.

According to preliminary estimates, the murder occurred between 13 and 17 hours. First, they checked the involvement of friend Olga. She didn't confirm.

On the morning of July 4, on Yablochkov Street, a man took the dog to the garages. In the forest belt found the body of Irina, an employee of the Moscow city Duma. She kept her papers.

The day before, Irina and her friend were visiting. In the morning, the friend left in a passing car. Irina went to the road, too.

A friend saw her near a white “Moskvich”: the woman was talking to the driver. A friend later reported that she got home safely. Irina was initially estimated to have been killed between 4 and 6 a.m.

Both murders subsequently entered Mirgorod's first case. In court publications, the surname of an employee of the Moscow City Duma – Hero appeared.

In the summer of 2003, the police publicly rejected the idea of a single criminal. Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov said the killings had no signs of being committed by one person or group. The head of the Moscow police Department Vladimir Pronin also called them coincidences.

Later, the death of Olga and Irina was considered in one criminal case, along with other murders of Mirgorod.

In 2004, Mirgorod was arrested on charges of rape and robbery. The investigator later told MK how the police came to him.

Mirgorod was traveling with a friend and picked up a fellow traveler. The woman had to meet her husband and pay for the trip. She called her husband and told him she was coming.

After the conversation, the car changed direction. The woman was taken into the forest, raped and robbed. Among the items taken was a mobile phone.

It was passed on to other people. The new owner was installed after he inserted his SIM card into the phone. The investigation restored the chain of transmission of the device and came to Mirgorod and his friend.

The case went to trial, but Mirgorod was not charged with the murders.

“MK” gave a fragment of the characteristic, which the precinct presented to the court: “I ask the respected court to take into account the complete remorse for what he did.” She was in a rape and robbery case. The murders remained unsolved.

Preobrazhensky district court of Moscow appointed Mirgorod imprisonment. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, he served his sentence from January 2005 to July 2010. After the end of his term, he was released.

The first murder case spanned 2002-2004. The second investigation extended the timeline to June 2000. It included crimes in the north, north-west and north-east of Moscow, as well as in the suburbs.

Some of the victims died before the women whose murders were considered by the first court. Others were in the same years, but their deaths remained beyond the original charge. The youngest of the victims in the new case was 15 years old, the oldest – 48.

Komsomolskaya Pravda described two early episodes. On June 24, 2000, Mirgorod met 36-year-old Nadezhda. Near the clinic number 6 offered a drink, then raped and strangled the woman. January 4, 2001 in Khimki met 48-year-old Valentina near the stadium “Mayak”. Offered a walk, beat and strangled her.

In some cases, he tried to hide the circumstances of his death. According to prosecutors, the bodies of two victims Mirgorod burned after strangulation, hiding the rapes. The body of another woman was thrown into the water.

A participant in the investigation told MK about attempts to pass off murders for suicide. The dead were found in forest strips, entrances and a garage.

One of the victims was returning home from work in Khimki. By the subway, she got into Mirgorod's car. On the way, I called my husband and asked him to come out.

A participant in the investigation told MK: the woman reported that she was approaching the bridge. She was later found dead in the Khimki forest park.

Among the victims was a minor girl from Naro-Fominsk. She studied in Moscow and worked as a cinema administrator. In Mitina, Mirgorod offered her a trip.

The girl refused to get in the car. Then he offered to see her off. According to the interlocutor of “MK”, Mirgorod later claimed that he went with her. In the morning, the girl was found murdered in the entrance.

At the end of April 2004, another woman met Mirgorod at the River Station metro station. She was coming back from the cafe. They went on foot and bought beer on the way.

A participant in the investigation told MK that Mirgorod killed her near the house. At the scene of this murder, a handkerchief and a belt were seized near Lavochkin Street.

In June 2004 in Angelov lane found another dead on the landing. Her murder is also part of the second case.

A new sentence also covered the murder of a man. According to the Investigative Committee, on September 20, 2003, near Dubninskaya Street, Mirgorod attacked an unfamiliar person: he beat him, then strangled him with a belt.

The murders of Olga in the Botanical Garden and Irina Gero on Yablochkov were included in the first sentence. The death of a man near Dubninskaya is the second, although all three died in 2003.

All 16 additional murders were committed between June 2000 and June 2004, before Mirgorod's first arrest.

During a new investigation, Mirgorod described one of the attacks as a murder. He thought the victim was dead. Officers searched for a suitable unsolved case but found rape material. It turned out that the woman was still alive.

According to Komsomolskaya Pravda, on the night of March 9, 2003, Mirgorod forcibly dragged a 20-year-old victim into a car. When she tried to look out the window, he hit her.

In the forest belt subjected a woman to sexual violence, strangled, stabbed and left. She managed to get to the road where she was found by the driver of a passing car.

The entrance to the road and the help of the motorist was later confirmed by the prosecutor's office. The attack, which Mirgorod described as murder, entered the new case as an assassination attempt.

The interlocutor of “MK” said that the victim asked to talk to her employee. In December 2024, the woman was questioned. She asked not to be subpoenaed.

The victim identified Mirgorod from the photo and gave detailed testimony. After the second trial, the prosecutor’s office separately noted them.

At the same time, Mirgorod, admitting the murders, denied rape. According to the prosecutor's office, he insisted on the consent of the victims for sexual intercourse. Charges of sexual offences were also considered by the court.

Long before this interrogation, in 2010, the investigation established the involvement of Mirgorod in the unsolved murders. After his release from the colony, he was free for several months.

The former head of the MUR unit Alexander Sudakov later said that Mirgorod came to report to the police department. He was fingerprinted again.

Verification showed a match with traces left at the sites of unsolved murders. Sudakov attributed the result to the update of the fingerprint system: while Mirgorod was in custody, the police moved to another base.

The operatives opened an archive case of rape and robbery. They found former RUBOP employees who worked with Mirgorod after his arrest in 2004.

The participant of the investigation also told MK that after his release, Mirgorod mentioned the murder in a conversation with random acquaintances. This information reached law enforcement agencies.

He was arrested again in October 2010. The representative of the capital’s Investigative Committee Victoria Tsyplenkova told MK that Mirgorod began to give confessional testimony after the presentation of the results of DNA examination.

On January 18, 2012, a closed trial began in the Moscow City Court. On January 30, the court sentenced Mirgorod to life imprisonment for the murder of 16 people.

On 21 June 2012, the Supreme Court heard the case. The life sentence remained.

According to MK, in the spring of 2024, experts examined the scarf and belt seized after the murder near Lavochkin Street in 2004. Biological traces matched the genetic profile of Mirgorod.

The prosecutor’s office said that during the investigation of the old case, the prosecutor revealed this expert opinion. The convict was transferred to Moscow for investigative actions.

Investigators and investigators compared unsolved attacks, examined cases with similar circumstances, and examined surviving evidence. According to the Investigative Committee, molecular genetic examinations using modern technologies were used in the work.

A senior forensic investigator of the capital’s Investigative Committee told Izvestia that at first Mirgorod did not want to remember the crimes. Then I started talking, but I remembered them fragmentarily.

Maps and photos of places were brought for interrogation. With their help, the circumstances of meetings and attacks were restored. According to the investigator, the work took about six months. At the same time, they made a confession.

Each episode was checked on the spot. Prosecutors said Mirgorod described in detail how he attacked and killed the victims.

On August 23, 2024, the capital’s Investigative Committee announced the establishment of five additional murders. The Ministry referred to the results of examinations and confessions, and also reported that together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to identify other crimes.

By the end of the investigation, the prosecutor’s office announced that Mirgorod had confessed to 16 additional murders.

In the spring of 2025, a new case was submitted to the Golovinsky District Court of Moscow. At the hearing on April 15, Mirgorod participated via video link from the detention center.

Journalists saw him brought into the room and seated on a chair. He was wearing a baseball cap and a medical mask. After the start of the connection, the press left the hall.

The hearing was closed at the preliminary hearing because of information about crimes against sexual integrity.

The verdict was announced on June 18, 2025. The court found Mirgorod guilty of 16 murders, attempted murder, two rapes and violent sexual acts.

The final punishment was imposed by the court, taking into account the previous sentence of the Moscow City Court and the cassation decision of the Supreme Court of June 21, 2012 - life imprisonment in a special regime correctional colony.

The verdict was appealed. The Moscow City Court left the sentence unchanged, appeals without satisfaction.

on december 9, 2025, the prosecutor’s office reported that the new sentence had entered into legal force.

Mirgorod was found guilty of killing 32 people: 30 women, a man and a teenager. A separate episode in the second case was the attempted murder of a woman he believed was dead.
