At lunchtime, a resident of the capital in Viber called a stranger and introduced herself as an employee of the personnel department of the organization in which the woman allegedly works. She said that a lawyer came, got acquainted with the personal file of the Minsk woman and urgently asked to contact him.
After a brief conversation with the “lawyer”, a pseudo-employee of the KGB got in touch. He said that the bank card of the woman was transferred to an extremist organization of Ukraine. Without choosing expressions, he began to intimidate the interlocutor: a criminal case will be opened against her, the apartment will be searched and all the money that will be found, arrested and not returned. The pseudo-employee also proposed to declare the existing savings, noting that everything should happen in conditions of strict confidentiality. The frightened citizen agreed.
Soon an unknown man came to her home, to whom the Minsk woman gave $30,581 and 15,200 euros. The fraudsters kept her in touch.
However, this was not enough, and the next day the scammers forced the woman to find her husband’s stash – 6,470 euros, which she also handed over to the courier.
The following week, the attackers regularly contacted her, reminding her that no one should even mention what was happening. They then told them to go to the address and take the money from the man, who was allegedly in the same situation. Minchanka fulfilled the order and subsequently, under strict control, handed over a package of money to an unfamiliar girl.
After some time, the woman still decided to tell her daughter about everything - she insisted on going to the police. Currently, on this fact Zavodsky (Minsk) ROSK initiated a criminal case under part 4 of article 209 of the criminal code (fraud committed on an especially large scale).
- Despite extensive preventive work, the capital continues to register cases when citizens fall for the tricks of telephone fraudsters, said Nikolai Afanasyev, head of the Zavodsky (Minsk) district department of the Investigative Committee. Potential victims are presented by the attackers as active employees of the police, the KGB or the Investigative Committee and demand to transfer savings to a “safe account” or declare them.
To give the appearance of legality to their actions, they show citizens “service” certificates and offices, photos in uniforms, send fake decrees and notifications allegedly signed by officials.
It is important to remember: law enforcement officers will never require citizens to transfer money, will not call them in the messenger and request personal data, as well as account information, bank card details and codes from SMS. If there are doubts about the identity of the interlocutor, contact the bank or police for clarification of information.
