Unknown intruders caused damage to ancient stone slabs with rock paintings in the U.S. state of Utah, as reported by the regional office for land distribution.
In a statement released on social media, the agency said law enforcement was investigating two separate cases of vandalism against prehistoric petroglyphic panels in the Moab area. In both incidents, the intruders scratched their names directly on or in close proximity to ancient stone surfaces.
Authorities stress that acts of vandalism and damage to archaeological sites qualify as a serious federal offense. For such actions, the perpetrators face significant monetary fines, real terms of imprisonment, as well as a ban on visiting territories under federal jurisdiction.
