Brazilian special forces neutralize man who took 13 children hostage in kindergarten

Special forces neutralized an armed man who entered a preschool in the city of Curitiba (Parana state) in southern Brazil. The offender for about three hours held hostage a group of children and staff of the institution, reports the news portal UOL, citing local military police.

The emergency occurred in the afternoon in the municipal center of preschool education district of San Braz. The offender climbed over the fence, broke into the building and barricaded himself in one of the rooms with a group of pupils aged four to five years. At the same time, the staff of the institution managed to quickly bring the remaining children to a safe place.

According to reports, the attacker was armed with a knife and had a dummy firearm. In addition, he doused the room with flammable liquid and threatened to set fire.

The commander of the special operations unit, Alexandre Lopez Diaz, explained that the security forces decided to launch a tactical assault at the most appropriate time. According to him, the fighters entered the room immediately after the offender took out the lighter and began threatening to set fire to the room. The law enforcement agencies also stressed that the physical neutralization of the attacker became inevitable when he tried to capture one of the children.

As a result of the operation, all 13 minor hostages were released. Two of them suffered injuries. Five pupils were sent to a medical facility for examination, and all affected children were provided with the necessary psychological support.

The police added that, according to preliminary information, the destroyed man suffered from schizophrenia and during the three-hour negotiations behaved incoherently. When entering the building, he dropped a letter, the text of which is currently being studied by investigators. The exact motive for the attack is still being established.
