French police found two paintings stolen in early September from the Impressionist Pierre Auguste Renoir Museum, located in the commune of Caignes-sur-Mer in southern France. This was reported by BFMTV. These are the works “Young Woman at the Well” and “Madame Column Romano”.
A month ago, on September 8, TV channel TF1 reported that two attackers entered the Renoir Museum in the early morning and stole four paintings, cutting them out of the frames. As later told in the Prosecutor’s office of Marseille, in less than three minutes, the criminals removed from the walls four paintings of the master – “Young woman at the well”, “Madame Column Romano”, “Coco reading” and “Portrait of Madame Stefan Pichon”. During the escape, they threw two paintings in the garden of the museum - "Coco reading" and "Portrait of Madame Stefan Pichon".
Some of the stolen works were left at the crime scene by the attackers themselves, and two more works remained undiscovered until recently. On October 7, it became known about the detention of six people, two of whom are suspected of direct theft. The discovery of the two remaining paintings was an important step in the investigation of this audacious crime, which caused a wide public outcry in France.
Further investigation is underway to establish all the circumstances of the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
