The boatmaster was given a year in prison for the death of a child on a river in the Russian region

In the Khabarovsk Territory, the court sentenced a local resident, because of which a walk along the river ended in the death of a young boy. The man was found guilty of violating safety rules while driving a small vessel, the Eastern Interregional Investigation Department for Transport of the Investigative Committee of Russia reported.

The tragedy occurred in June 2026 on the Maya River near the village of Nelkan. The man, who did not have a boatmaster's license, set sail with two passengers, among whom was a child. Before going to the water, he was not convinced of the serviceability of the steering mechanism.

During the movement, the boat suddenly lost control, deviated from the course and capsized. All three were in the river without life jackets. The adults managed to reach the shore on their own, but the boy could not escape and drowned.

The court found that the cause of the fatal accident was non-compliance with safety requirements during the operation of water transport. The offender was sentenced to one year of imprisonment with serving a sentence in a colony-settlement.
