Hurricane Isaacs, approaching the US coast, became the first hurricane of the Atlantic season in 2026 and set a record for the timing of the formation. This is reported by Scientific American magazine.
The Atlantic hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to November 30. In 2026, it turned out to be unusually calm: not a single hurricane formed in the region until October.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States, “Isaias” strengthened before the hurricane on October 7. The previous record was set in 1905, when the first hurricane of the season formed on October 8.
One of the reasons for the low activity in the Atlantic, scientists call El Niño. This climatic phenomenon changes the atmospheric circulation and enhances the wind shear over the ocean, making it difficult for tropical cyclones to form and develop.
