The number of cases of bears reaching settlements in Mongolia is growing, as of October 13 since the beginning of the year was 1,006, in 80% of cases, bears with cubs were seen. This is reported by TASS with reference to the state commission for emergency situations of the neighboring country.
“Recently, there has been an increase in the number of adult males reaching the population. More than 40 incidents related to attacks on livestock and dogs, as well as damage to fences, residential buildings and vehicles have been recorded. The saddest case was recorded in a suburb of the capital of Mongolia, where an animal took the life of one person and seriously injured another. To date, it has been possible to prevent 20 penetrations of bears into residential areas, the emergency commission quotes the figures.
According to the source, most often wild animals approached settlements on protected lands, as well as in central and adjacent to Russia aimaks, where the main forest lands of Mongolia are concentrated.
Local administrations have the authority to control the number of bears and, if necessary, to shoot them, but this does not give the right to hunt without control. Instead, comprehensive measures are being implemented that take into account regional specificities and are implemented under the auspices of the profile structure.
In the event of a security threat, police and military persons authorized to use small arms are involved. The state commission warns that in areas where there are no representatives of law enforcement agencies, licensed hunters are involved to fight predators.
