Panama's National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) and rescue services have activated surveillance protocols. The aim is to assess possible impacts in areas close to the epicenter, as well as in parts of the provinces of Los Santos, Herrera and Veraguas.
Tremors caused alarm among the population and were strongly felt in different parts of the country, including the capital. At the moment, the authorities have not officially confirmed information about property damage, injuries or deaths. Checks on the condition of the buildings continue.
Earlier, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported that an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 was recorded in Panama at 11:56 local time (20:56 GMT). According to the center, the epicenter was located 213 kilometers south-west of the capital, and the hearth lay at a depth of 12 kilometers.
