Sevastopol police detained a 50-year-old unemployed local resident, who paid in shops with souvenir bank notes “Ticket of a joke bank”. The man explained his actions by the fact that he “wanted to eat”. This was reported in the interior Ministry of Crimea.
According to law enforcement officers, Sevastopol was left without money and was in a difficult situation. Then he remembered about the souvenir five thousandth bills with the inscription “Ticket of the bank of jokes”, which he once purchased for entertainment. The man decided to try to pay them for purchases.
The first episode took place in the market. Sevastopolets chose products for 900 rubles and handed the seller a five-thousandth souvenir bill. The woman did not notice the catch and gave the change. Satisfied with the result, the man went home.
After a while, he decided to repeat the scheme. In the store, he bought pastries for 420 rubles and again received change from “five thousand”.
However, this series of successful purchases was interrupted. The merchants found fake bills among the proceeds and contacted the police. The operatives arrested the intruder.
The man confessed and fully compensated the victims for the damage, which amounted to ten thousand rubles. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against him on fraud. The maximum sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for up to two years.
The use of souvenir notes for settlements is not an isolated case on the peninsula. Earlier in May 2025, a resident of the Saka district paid for the tools with banknotes of the “bask of jokes”.
In the store, he paid four fake bills - two denominations of 2000 rubles and two 1000 rubles. Of the total purchase amount of 13 thousand rubles, only 7 thousand were real. The 45-year-old confessed to what he had done.
Earlier, in July 2022, three Crimeans organized a large-scale scheme: men 25, 32 and 35 years old bought fake banknotes in the online store with a nominal value of 5000 rubles and paid them in the shops of Sevastopol and Simferopol, specifically choosing points without video surveillance.
In total, they sold 141 fake bills worth more than 700 thousand rubles. Detentions took place at places of residence in Sevastopol and Armeniansk, the men were threatened with up to eight years in prison.
