On Thursday morning, a fire broke out at the Nelson Mandela Lyceum in Nantes in western France. The fire started when there was a demonstration of students outside the building. This was reported by the Internet portal actu.fr.
The footage published by the portal shows that part of the facade of the building is engulfed in fire from the ground floor to the roof. A number of lyceum students told reporters that the fire started after 08:00 local time (09:00 Moscow time). An unnamed teacher told an Actu correspondent that it was not the students of this lyceum who were behind the arson.
One of the high school students said that when they approached the school, only garbage cans were burning. According to him, the arsonists were students from other schools in Nantes and the suburbs, who came to start a fire, fireworks and damage the educational institution. He said that between 08:10 and 08:30 they burned not only the tanks, but also the entire lobby, as well as almost half of the building. Another student stressed that the participants came to defend their rights, and not to set fire to the school, because it was there that they were taught these rights.
The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd in front of the lyceum. Firefighters began extinguishing the fire after 08:30 local time (09:30 Moscow time). According to the portal, as a result of the incident, part of the dormitory at the Lyceum was also affected.
We will remind, protests of high school students began last week in the metropolitan region of Île-de-France. Their participants oppose overloaded schedules, teacher shortages and other problems in the education system. As of Wednesday, law enforcement officers detained 625 protesters.
