Driver shoots police officer after saluting and gets huge sentence
A court in Santa Clara County in California has sentenced Jeffrey Choi to 50 years to life in prison for the attempted murder of a police officer

A court in California's Santa Clara County has sentenced Jeffrey Choi to 50 years to life in prison for the attempted murder of a police officer. The man opened fire at close range during a road check. One of the shots injured an employee, but the bulletproof vest stopped further movement of the bullet, the district attorney's office said.
The attack took place on July 16, 2022 in Mountain View. A police officer worked on a shift to identify drunk drivers and stopped the Ford Explorer after violating intersection rules. As the employee approached the driver's door, they exchanged greetings. Choi then picked up the gun and fired twice.
The first bullet passed by. The second pierced the hand of a police officer and hit his body armor. Choi left, soon crashed his car and continued to hide on foot. He spent several hours in the laundry room, after which he managed to leave the city. The next day, he was detained outside a restaurant in Fremont, where he had come to eat with his family.
A jury found Choi guilty of attempted murder earlier this year. At the time of the attack, he was already prohibited from owning a weapon because of a criminal record. He was also released on bail and wanted in a case of illegal possession of a pistol.
The injured employee recovered and returned to duty. At the meeting on the imposition of punishment, the court presented his letter. The police officer said the wounds healed, but the experience continues to affect the relationship with his wife, four children and colleagues.
