In Castellammara di Stabia, Italy, three doctors and a midwife are suspected of concealing the circumstances of the infant's death. At the end of March 2024, he died, having lived a little more than a month. The Torre-Annunziata prosecutor's office has launched an investigation to establish the possible responsibility of the health workers.

Investigators believe that immediately after the birth, employees took action to conceal the alleged errors. The artificially created node on the umbilical cord, according to the prosecution, was supposed to present what happened as a consequence of an unforeseen complication that gynecologists could not prevent. Then the umbilical cord and placenta were immediately disposed of. This procedure, according to the investigation, contradicted the usual practice of the hospital.

In addition, the defendants are suspected of changing the medical record. The proposed corrections concerned the time of presence of staff members and their procedures. According to the investigation, medical workers also agreed among themselves explanations that were going to give law enforcement officers.

The organizer of the alleged falsification, the prosecutor's office considers the then head of the department of gynecology. According to her, he used his influence in the team to defend his position and to achieve a change in the evidence. The court put him under house arrest. Two other doctors and a midwife were suspended for 12 months.

The investigation covers alleged negligence in the provision of medical care, forgery of official documents and actions to mislead the investigation. The case is under preliminary investigation. The defendants may appeal against the measures imposed; their guilt has not been established by the court.
