German cyclist Max Riese has died at the age of 36 after a crash on the Rossfeldstrasse mountain road in Germany, according to the organization he founded GravGrav. The athlete was known for participating in ultramarathon races on rough terrain.
According to GravGrav, the tragedy occurred on September 15. Riese went on a training trip, and in the evening he was found by a woman in serious condition on the roadway. Rescuers tried to help, but the man died on the spot.
Police have not yet established an accurate picture of the incident. Evidence found on the road indicates a possible collision of the athlete with a deer.
Riese was considered one of the strongest ultracyclists in the world. In this discipline, participants overcome hundreds and thousands of kilometers with large elevation differences. Last year, he set a world record in the "triple Everesting" - a race where the athlete repeatedly climbs and descends one slope to reach a total height of 26,544 meters.
