Mobiri Index
The Russian stock market ended last week with strong growth. The index of the Moscow Exchange (IMOEX) following the results of the main trading session on Friday, October 9, increased by 0.38%, to 2321.31 points. The IMOEX2 index, which shows the dynamics of the market including in the evening and morning sessions, ended the day in a positive 3.94%, to 2401.8 points.
“The new week in the Russian market begins with an attempt to overestimate geopolitical risk,” said Yaroslav Kabakov, strategy director of Finam. The index of the Moscow Exchange returned above 2,400 points after the diesel deal and Donald Trump’s statements about an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine, he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in a telephone conversation on October 9 agreed on the supply of Russian diesel to world markets.
The United States withdrew from sanctions operations with Russian diesel until April 7.
On Sunday, October 11, IMOEX rose 0.19%, to 2,410.26 points on Trump’s statements that an energy truce was being established between Russia and Ukraine and both sides agreed to it. The next day, however, the growth was reversed.
Analyst “Digital broker” Dmitry Vishnevsky expects that the index of the Moscow Exchange on Monday, October 12, will continue to play geopolitical news and will trade in the range of 2370-2450 points.
On the morning of Monday, October 12, IMOEX2, according to 8:02 MSK, decreases by 0.45% to the close of evening trading on October 9, to 2391.19 points.
Shares of oil and gas companies
Shares of Russian oil and gas companies were in the leaders of growth on Friday on news about the agreements between the presidents of Russia and the United States on the supply of Russian diesel to the world market.
According to the results of trading in the top 10 growth index Mosbirzhi entered (from the companies of the sector):
Rosneft (+10.1%); LUKOIL (+8.4%); Surgutneftegaz (ordinary shares) (+7.6%); TATNEFT (ordinary shares) (+6.4%); Gazprom (+5.8%); TATNEFT (privileged shares) (+5.3%); NOVATEK (+4.6%).
Positive for the sector was also the statement of US President Donald Trump that Russia and Ukraine agreed to a truce in the energy sector.
"However, it is premature to consider the agreement to have taken place: the statements of the parties are contradictory, and there is no confirmation of a sustainable cessation of strikes on the Russian energy infrastructure," Yaroslav Kabakov, director of strategy at Finam, warned.
According to him, the main question of the week is whether the political signal will turn into real fuel supplies, the restoration of oil refining and reduction of sanctions and logistics costs. Without this, the rally risks remaining a speculative rebound, Kabakov stressed.
Yandex shares
Yandex shares collapsed on Sunday on reports that on the night of October 11, the Yandex data center in Vladimir was attacked by drones. This is the company’s third facility to be hit. Some of the services of “Yandex” after the attack was inaccessible to users.
The decrease reached the maximum possible (due to the restrictions of the Moscow Exchange) value of 2.88%, but at the end of the day, quotes bounced slightly. Following the results of trading, shares fell by 2.36%, to у3373.5 per share
Quotes of the company continued to fall on Monday morning, at a minimum losing 5.79% compared to Friday's close.
On Sunday evening, the company reported that Yandex services are gradually returning to work after a failure. This concerned “Alice”, “Yandex Search”, “Yandex Maps”, “Yandex Taxi”, mail and other services. However, some of their functions remained inaccessible.
In the current conditions, stocks may lag behind the overall dynamics of the Moscow Exchange Index. The company will have to bear the cost of rebuilding the infrastructure. In addition, investors may be afraid of a repetition of attacks, said Vasily Karpunin, head of information and analytical content at Alfa-Investments.
