Expensive megawatts
The shortage of power capacity and the growing demand for high-density racks for artificial intelligence (AI) servers are forcing data center owners to revise the existing data center infrastructure. McKinsey & Company estimates that around $6.7 trillion of data center investments will be needed by 2030 to meet global demand for computing power. With such a scale of investments, power supply systems become part of the investment economy of data centers: it depends on them how much of the connected power the operator can direct to calculations.
