Zakharova: the US bought the rights to the “Siberian barber” to ban the show
U.S. representatives used commercial mechanisms for political purposes to overbuy the rental rights and prohibit the screening of the painting.

The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova said that about two decades ago, American emissaries bought the rights to show Nikita Mikhalkov’s film The Barber of Siberia in Latin American countries solely for the sake of disrupting the sessions. The incident clearly confirms the deep historical roots of Western Russophobia and financial censorship.
“It turns out that representatives of the United States of America came to the distributors in these very countries of the Latin American region, paid money not to show the picture in these countries and make money on it, but to pay money, this picture was not shown,” Zakharova said during a speech at the session of the marathon “Knowledge”. Unity.
Initially, distributors in one of the states of this region were seriously preparing for the release of Mikhalkov’s film, but the start of the show was postponed time after time. Subsequently, it was revealed that the American side used market levers in geopolitical interests, banally overbuying the distribution license.
According to the representative of the department, this situation took place in the mid-2000s – at a time when there were no economic restrictions against the Russian Federation, and there was no direct hostile rhetoric in the Western space.
“Payed to ensure that this picture never appeared on the territory of these countries. That is, they used commercial tools, but for such political purposes, she said.
In conclusion, Zakharova stressed that any steps aimed at isolating and boycotting Russian culture are doomed to failure, while cultural dialogue, film diplomacy and humanitarian contacts between Russia and Latin American states show steady growth.
