In Minnesota detained 18-year-old Sheikhdun Abdullahi Mohamud, suspected of preparing a mass shooting at the Mall of America. This was reported by the US Department of Justice.
According to investigators, since December 2024, Mohamud discussed with a confidential source plans to join a terrorist organization in Somalia. If he could not leave the United States, he considered attacking his home state.
In July 2026, he allegedly opted for the Mall of America. In correspondence, he said he intended to kill between 30 and 60 people. Later, they discussed the purchase of weapons, the possible involvement of accomplices and the date of the attack – October 24. He sent a video with an oath of allegiance to ISIS (the organization is recognized as a terrorist and banned in Russia).
Mohamud associated his plan with a large crowd of people in the shopping center. He referred to the Hmong Arts Festival taking place there. In correspondence, he also spoke of a desire to repeat other mass attacks inspired by terrorists.
On October 6, an undercover FBI agent sold Mohamud an AK-47, four stores and about 200 rounds of ammunition. Before the deal, the machine was made unsuitable for shooting. After handing over approximately $600 in cash and receiving weapons and ammunition, he was detained. At the time of the deal, he confirmed his intention to use them for the Mall of America attack.
The next day, the 18-year-old terrorist appeared before a federal magistrate's judge for the first time. He is charged with knowingly obtaining firearms and ammunition to commit a federal crime of a terrorist nature.
