On Saturday, October 10, at Sredny Nevka in St. Petersburg, the annual autumn sprint championship of the Energia club was held, organized by the Association of Rowing Sports Fans. The correspondent of “MK in St. Petersburg” Olga Kalyuzhnaya shared what is happening.
Dress code in the style of “Soviet sport” and the competitive atmosphere did their job: rowers seemed not to notice the drizzling rain and drizzly weather. For rowers, an extensive grid of races was prepared, dividing athletes into four competitive categories: professionals, amateurs, veterans and a special race for Viking class boats. Athletes demonstrated mastery of the Scythian, Poluskif and Coastal class vessels. The focus was on singles, who have to identify the strongest at a short but exhausting sprint distance of 200 meters. The beginnings from which the water boiled went one after another. On the shore of the “lords of the cheers” were supported by friends and family members.
Traditionally, the sports component was supplemented by a cultural block. Immediately after the completion of the main races, unique retro boats came to the water, including authentic exhibits provided by the film crew of the film First on Olympus. "Rowing is more than a sport, miles of distance and fighting in seconds," the organizers say. First of all, it is a community of people who share emotions on the shore and on the water.
Tomorrow, October 11, the traditional race of eights in memory of Honored Coach of the RSFSR V.P. Dundur will take place. These events will be the final point in the competitive season of rowers before leaving for the winter break.
