Bloomberg reveals how Asia's 'paradise' turns away from tourists

Residents of Thailand are unhappy that foreigners stay in the country for a long time and do business, including in the tourism sector

Thailand began to turn away from tourists because of foreign businessmen, writes Bloomberg. The agency calls this country the “paradise corner” of Asia.

For decades, Thailand has presented itself as a paradise where foreigners can come without question. A generous visa system, condescending attitude and budget tourism industry have turned the country into one of the most visited places in the world. Now, according to Bloomberg, it faces the consequences of its success.

Protests have erupted across Thailand in recent months under the slogan "Take back Thailand." Local residents are unhappy that foreigners stay in the country for a long time and continue to profit from their economic activities, especially in the tourist area.

On the Thai island of Phagan, which has a population of less than 10,000 and hosts more than a million foreigners a year, most businesses are controlled by foreigners. Locals believe it changes the island "out of recognition.".

In addition to resentment over foreigners doing business, there is also growing anger among Thai citizens towards tourists who show disrespect. Videos of such incidents go viral on Thai social networks.

In addition to citizens, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charviracul is also concerned about foreign influence on the country. In his view, influence is a threat to both national and economic security. The Thai government has inspected thousands of businesses, leading to more than 110 arrests and dozens of warrants issued. In addition, it affected the immigration policy of the country – the authorities reduced visa-free entry for most nationalities from 60 to 30 days, which should make it difficult to abuse tourist visas for long-term stays or establish a business.

Bloomberg notes that Thailand’s economy is heavily dependent on tourist traffic and employs about 4 million people in the sector. Tourism also provides up to one-fifth of the country’s GDP.

According to the Ministry of Commerce of the country, almost 70% of the approximately 16,800 companies registered in Phangan and Koh Samui - one of the most popular tourist destinations - have foreign complicity.

Authorities say that more than 240 enterprises using nominal structures were identified on these islands, with the participation of foreigners including from Russia, Germany, Israel, France and others. Investigations are ongoing.

Earlier, Thai TV channel Amarin TV reported that the authorities of Phuket increased security measures in connection with the arrival of about 5,000 US Navy troops on the island. 150 police officers were involved in law enforcement.
