A powerful explosion of a falling meteorite occurred over the capital of Libya – Tripoli, according to the state news agency of the country Lana, citing the center for remote sensing and space research.

The center said that the entry of a small celestial body into the Earth’s atmosphere at a very high speed and friction with the air lead to the combustion of this object and an increase in temperature, because of which it begins to glow brightly and leave a fiery trail.

At the same time, experts stressed that such a spectacle can not always be caused by a meteorite. They point out that such an effect can be observed in the combustion of space debris — parts of satellites or old rockets that entered the Earth's atmosphere.

In March, a meteorite exploded over Ohio in the United States. A celestial body with a diameter of almost two meters entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of more than 72 thousand kilometers per hour and exploded.

The explosion released energy equivalent to 250 tons of TNT, which caused a powerful roar and vibrations that were felt by residents of Cleveland and surrounding areas.

The same month, another meteorite was spotted in the sky over Texas. At the same time, one of the debris of the celestial body pierced the roof of a two-storey residential building, no one was injured.
