Investigators opened a criminal case after the death of a 57-year-old paratrooper in the Ryazan region, the Western Interregional Investigation Department for Transport of the UK reported.
According to TASS Vice-President of the Russian Parachute Federation Vadim Niyazov, the parachutist was the record holder Sergey Sergienko, who decided to jump from 6 thousand meters.
According to the investigation, in the afternoon of October 4, the man performed a parachute jump at the Krutitsa airfield in the Shilovsky district and received serious injuries when landing. He was hospitalized, but later died.
The incident was qualified as the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements and caused the death of a person by negligence (paragraph 2 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code). The maximum penalty is up to six years in prison.
RBC asked for a comment in the IC in the Ryazan region.
According to eyewitnesses, which leads the telegram channel SHOT, he had problems with the main parachute: the dome behaved unstablely, and about six meters from the ground sharply “pied” forward. Maybe the parachute was defective.
In 2019, Sergienko joined a team of 22 paratroopers who in freefall in Arizona consistently built four pieces and set a world record.
In 2022, he joined a team of 15 athletes named Sergey, who at Aerograd Kolomna performed a group jump and built three figures in freefall. The achievement was recorded as the most massive parachute jump by people with the same name.
