The U.S. Armed Forces Command in Okinawa imposed a curfew on military personnel after the arrest of a Marine on charges of killing a local woman. This was reported by the ground task force of naval aviation in the prefecture in the social network X.
From 12:00 on October 7 to 12:00 on October 9, all U.S. troops in Okinawa are subject to a two-day period of mandatory training in the rules of conduct and discipline, during which all off-duty activities, including personal travel outside bases, are terminated.
After this training, a month-long curfew will be imposed for the military.
Starting on Friday 9 October, a 30-day period of reflection will be introduced. For this period, a curfew is introduced, as well as restrictions on the use of alcohol: military personnel will not be outside the base or drink alcohol from 00:00 to 05:00.
The command also plans to tighten control over military behavior outside bases.
Earlier, on October 5, police detained a 20-year-old American military officer on suspicion of killing 39-year-old Anna Yaga early Saturday morning in a hotel in the city of Naha. According to NHK, a cord-like object was wrapped around the woman's neck.
After the incident, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi demanded stricter discipline among American troops, and the US Ambassador to Japan George Glass was summoned to the foreign Ministry, where he was protested. Glass expressed regret over the death of the woman and promised full cooperation in the investigation.
Okinawa is home to 70% of all US military installations in Japan.
