The government of Kazakhstan has prepared amendments limiting the registration of users under the age of 16 on online platforms, Kazinform reports, citing the response of Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov to the parliamentary request. Documents are considered by the deputies of the Kurultai.
After their adoption, the authorities will establish rules for confirming the age. “Developing the rules will take into account the existing mechanisms of online platforms, the possibility of identification using artificial intelligence, the content viewed and user activity,” he said.
As an example, the Prime Minister cited Meta (recognized in Russia as extremist and banned), which plans to implement the AgeKey system for age verification. Authorities are also considering temporarily suspending existing accounts for children under 16. Verification should take place without the dissemination of personal data.
In Australia, since December 2025, there is a ban on social networks for children under the age of 16, and the responsibility for its implementation is assigned to the platforms. In June 2026, the UK announced the introduction of the same age threshold. In the European Union (EU) in the summer proposed to restrict access to social networks for children under 13 years.
