September 2026 in Moscow was warmer than normal by 2.2 degrees, but the anomaly was not a record, said the head of the prognostic center “Meteo” Alexander Shuvalov.
Exceeding the norm in September 2026 was not too significant – only 2.2 degrees. This is very important. The fact is that this is the fourth year in a row when the temperature exceeds the norm and exceeds quite significantly, he said.
According to the weather forecaster, the average temperature of September was plus 14.1 degrees. For comparison, September 2024 was three degrees warmer: its average temperature reached plus 17.1 degrees, and it remains a record for anomalies.
“I would not call this September too anomalous, but the fact that every year we have a positive anomalous temperature for four years in a row is a fact quite bright and alarming, saying that climate change is going on and on the increase,” Shuvalov concluded.
According to the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, September 2026 was the fifth warmest in Moscow since the beginning of observations in 1891. Warmer were September 2024, 2023, 2018 and 1938. The summer of 2026 in Russia as a whole was the warmest in the history of observations, but in the European part of the country the temperature remained close to normal.
On the night of October 8, frosts again bypassed Moscow. At the base metropolitan weather station VDNKh minimum temperature was plus 4.5 degrees. At other weather stations in Moscow, it dropped to plus 2.6 degrees in Butovo, on Balchug it was plus 7.4 degrees.
