On the night of October 8-9, the peak of activity of the Draconid meteor shower is expected. About it told RBC in the press service of the Moscow planetarium.
"Star Rain" will be visible from October 6 to 10, and maximum activity will be on tonight, October 9. Around 04:00 Moscow time you can see from 5 to 15 meteors per hour.
“The Draconid meteors can be observed in the evening hours above the northwestern horizon in an area with a clear dark sky. The meteor stream will be best seen in the Northern Hemisphere, the Moscow Planetarium said.
Against the background of clear weather during the maximum period, you can see small pieces that broke away from comet 21P / Giacobini-Zinner. They invade the atmosphere of our planet and flash, creating the effect of “shooting stars”.
Draconids are a meteor shower that Earth passes through every year. It comes from the constellation Dragon, where its radiant is located - the point from which meteors "fly out," the press service of the planetarium explained. In normal years, the stream is moderately active, but there are bursts when meteors are up to 500 or more per hour: in 1933 and 1946, up to a thousand meteors per hour were observed in the night sky.
