Three clouds of solar plasma are moving towards the Earth, the first of them will reach the planet on October 9 after 18:00 MSK and cause a magnetic storm of the G2 level, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of IKI RAS reported.
The first cloud was formed on October 6 by an M1.4-class solar flare. Scientists assumed that its arrival will cause intense auroras at latitudes from 55-60 degrees and above.
Two other clouds ejected by the Sun on October 7 and 8 are predicted to merge into one structure and reach Earth on Sunday in the middle of the day. Their arrival could trigger a second G2-level magnetic storm.
On the eve of the Sun recorded the most powerful since the end of summer flash class M6.7.
Solar plasma is an ionized gas containing free electrons and ions. The temperature and degree of ionization of this gas vary in different layers of the Sun.
Magnetic storms are evaluated on a five-point scale: G1 means a weak storm, G2 - medium, G3 - strong, G4 - very strong, G5 - extreme. In high-level storms, power systems, satellite navigation and radio communications may fail.
