In Siberia and the Far East, cases of bears reaching settlements have become more frequent. In some municipalities, increased threat regimes have been introduced, and groups of hunters have been formed to combat aggressive animals.
At least 2,208 thousand bears were shot in the regions of the Siberian Federal District (SFD). Hunters and law enforcement officers participated in the shooting.
According to TASS estimates, about 25 people have died as a result of the bear attack since the beginning of 2026. Most deaths were recorded in the Krasnoyarsk Territory - seven people died there.
As of October 8, according to the regional Ministry of Natural Resources, 898 bears have been neutralized in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. According to regional authorities, at least 414 brown bears were eliminated in the Irkutsk region, 263 in Tuva, and 204 in Khakassia.
In the regions of the Far Eastern Federal District (DFO), more than 1.13 thousand bears were shot. Most of the cases occurred in Buryatia, where 356 animals were shot, Yakutia - 188 and the Trans-Baikal Territory - 93. Such data are provided by regional relevant departments.
The shooting of bears was carried out in other regions of the district. On Sakhalin by October 5, 115 individuals were eliminated, in Kamchatka since the beginning of the year - 207, in Chukotka - five.
According to official data from August 1 to October 5, 2026, bear attacks on people were recorded in 13 Russian regions. The most resonant case in 2026 was in the Altai Republic, where on August 19, near the village of Artybash, a bear attacked a tent with two tourists, pulled a 29-year-old girl out of it, killed her and buried her in the forest.
According to “Medialogy” (calculated for RBC), in the summer of 2026, the number of reports in the media and social networks about the attack of bears on people doubled compared to the summer of 2025. For the period from June 1 to September 9 of this year, there were 23 thousand such reports in the media, in 2025 - 12.7 thousand.
In 2026, there are 307.9 thousand brown bears in Russia, while in 1990 there were 130 thousand individuals.
