Magnetic storm on Earth became the strongest in the last three months

Magnetic storm, which began on Earth at about 20:00 GMT, reached the level of G3 and became the strongest in the last three months, said the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy IKI RAS and ISZF SB RAS.
“The last time a magnetic storm of comparable strength was observed on July 4, 2026,” the report said.
The cause of the geomagnetic disturbances were clouds of solar plasma that reached the Earth after a strong surge in solar activity at the beginning of the week.
According to the forecast of the laboratory, the geomagnetic field can remain in a perturbed state for about a day.
Magnetic storms are evaluated on a five-point scale: G1 means a weak storm, G2 - medium, G3 - strong, G4 - very strong, G5 - extreme. In high-level storms, power systems, satellite navigation and radio communications may fail.
Earlier, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI RAS warned about the approach of three clouds of solar plasma to the Earth. According to the then-published forecast, the first cloud formed after the M1.4-class outburst on October 6 should have reached the planet on the evening of October 9 and caused a G2-level magnetic storm with intense auroras at latitudes between 55 and 60 degrees. Two more clouds, ejected by the Sun on October 7 and 8, could have combined to reach Earth on Sunday, triggering a second magnetic storm of similar strength.
