Gerhard Schroeder was a German politician and Federal Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005. He pursued a policy of strategic partnership with Russia, including in the energy sector. After leaving office, Schroeder held senior positions in Russian energy companies.

Earlier, on October 7, Vladimir Putin celebrated his 74th anniversary. One of the guests at the celebration of Putin’s birthday was former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, whom the president invited to his home after learning from the media about his arrival in Moscow. The Kremlin published photos of their meeting.
Schroeder arrived in the Russian capital on the affairs of the Globus hypermarket chain. He met with the management and employees of Hyperglobus LLC, which develops the network’s business in Russia. In early October, the former chancellor joined the company's supervisory board.
