Astronomers predicted the consequences for the Earth of the coronal hole in the Sun

A new wave of geomagnetic disturbances is expected on Earth on October 29-30 due to the impact of the coronal hole on the Sun. This was reported in the telegram channel of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory IKI RAS and ISZF SB RAS.
According to scientists, the Earth will enter the zone of action of the coronal hole around Wednesday, October 28. The solar wind speed will increase to a maximum of 600 km / s, which is about 50% higher than normal.
A coronal hole is a region in the sun’s outer atmosphere where plasma is less dense and colder than in surrounding regions. On ultraviolet and X-rays, it looks dark. The structure of the magnetic field in such regions allows charged particles to freely escape into space, forming fast streams of the solar wind. Reaching Earth, they can cause geomagnetic disturbances and magnetic storms.
“On Thursday and Friday, another wave of disturbances is expected, although the probability of breaking the threshold of magnetic storms is still estimated as low,” the laboratory said. Scientists expect to prepare a more accurate forecast on October 27-28.
Over the weekend, October 24-25, the geomagnetic situation completely calmed down. The last slight disturbance was observed on October 23. In the next two days, the Earth’s magnetosphere will also remain calm, scientists said.
On the evening of October 10, a magnetic storm began on Earth, which reached G3 levels and became the strongest in three months. It was caused by clouds of solar plasma ejected during a burst of activity in early October.
