In Germany, by the end of 2025, a total of 900 people were undergoing vocational training in the specialty “funeral business”, which was a record figure, according to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
According to the agency, the number of students studying for funeral organizers for ten years has more than doubled: in 2015, 430 people were trained under the programs.
Funeral studies are now more often chosen by women: in 2025, 61% of students in this field were women, compared to 39% of men. Ten years ago, the proportion of women was 46%, notes Destatis.
Demand for skilled professionals in the field is growing following the demand for ritual services, the department said. So, in comparison with 2015, in 2025, 9% more people died - 925 thousand and 1 million, respectively. In addition, the proportion of older people in the German population is increasing.
Destatis also notes that from 2024 to 2025 funeral services rose by 3.2%, and prices for coffins, urns, tombstones and other funeral accessories rose by 1.9%.
