The high-speed trains that collided in the Spanish province of Toledo had 544 passengers. At least 50 people were killed, according to local TV channel Antena3.
According to Padilla, the Renfe AVE 2080 had 397 passengers and the Iryo 7076 had 146 passengers. This was reported by the representative of the government of Castile – La Manchi Esther Padilla. The death toll could rise as rescuers have yet to reach the most damaged carriages.
The collision occurred in the province of Toledo (the autonomous community of Castilla - La Mancha) on the high-speed line Madrid - Andalusia. Traffic between the capital and the south of the country was suspended.
According to preliminary data, the cause of the accident could be a “human error”. An employee of the railway company Adif could make a mistake after the failure of the main alarm system. It works in automatic mode, but when a malfunction, the control of movement goes into manual. It is assumed that the dispatcher may have mistakenly allowed one of the trains to continue moving, despite the fact that the path was occupied by another train.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in his X, said he was "deeply saddened" by the train crash and expressed "solidarity and support for the victims and their families.".
The disaster occurred on the same Madrid-Sevilla line, where another train accident killed 46 people in Adamus in January 2026. Among the dead was a Russian citizen, as well as vice-champion in beach football David Cordon Cano.
